Agent Tip: Is liability-only insurance sufficient coverage for drivers in Arizona?

Mallory Mooney

Mallory Mooney

Linkedin

Director of Sales and Client Services, Insurify

The biggest mistake drivers make with liability-only coverage is choosing it just because it’s cheaper. If replacing your car after a total loss would strain your budget, the monthly savings may not be worth the risk.

Cheapest full-coverage car insurance in Arizona: Auto-Owners

Full-coverage car insurance costs more than liability-only coverage because it offers broader protection for Arizona drivers. It includes collision coverage and comprehensive coverage, which can help pay for damage to your vehicle after an accident, theft, vandalism, or weather-related events. It also typically has higher liability limits.

If you have a car loan or lease, your lender may require this level of protection. Arizona drivers pay around $159 per month for full coverage, but some insurers, including Auto-Owners, offer lower prices.

The table below shows the cheapest full-coverage car insurance rates for drivers in Arizona.

Why was I canceled?
Reviewed in Texas on February 9, 2026
1/14/26: Liked what I saw and purchased Auto Insurance. 1/29/26: Received an email requesting a "Physician's opinion statement." I did not see this requirement in the many pages of fine print. Was given 30 days to submit. 1/31/26: Via email, I requested information on how to cancel my policy and stated that I do not release medical data to anyone. I did not request the policy be canceled. 2/01/26: Relented. 2/03/26: Hand-delivered request to primary care doctor and made an appointment for an Ophthalmologist for 02/10/26. 2/07/26: Received a USPS letter from MileAuto stating the policy would be canceled effective 3/01/26. The reason given was that "Policy no longer meets underwriting requirements." I have no idea what requirements this refers to.

Punishment for 65+ years of no problems.
Reviewed in South Carolina on February 1, 2026
I have been licensed since two weeks before my 14th birthday, in other words, 65+ years. I had 2 tickets and 1 accident (that was in July 2024). It cost me a $25 fine and no points, yet my rate increased by 60%. This was the only claim against me over the years. I don't drive much, about 10,000 miles a year if that much, and yet I'm being punished for years of no problems. BTW, the patrolman questioned the ability of the on-lookers of the accident.

Why we picked this company

Auto-Owners works well for Arizona drivers who prefer working with a local agent when choosing coverage and managing claims. It has a network of insurance agents across the state and performed well in J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Auto Claims Study.

Reliable claims handling matters when you’re dealing with weather-related damage or frequent windshield repairs, which are common in Arizona.

Pros
  • Several discounts to help lower premiums

  • Local agents across Arizona for personalized service

  • Offers accident forgiveness and gap insurance

Insurance Claim
Reviewed in Arizona on March 11, 2026
Regarding the claim I had, I thought Progressive would have backed me since I feel that the incident was not my fault. There was nothing I could have done to avoid the e-bike from hitting the rear quarter panel of the passenger side of my car. Instead, they decided to settle the claim. If I were in a better financial position, I would have hired a lawyer and fought this. Well, it is closed now. I sincerely hope my rate does not increase due to this incident. Lastly, I am waiting for a release from the other party's attorney assuring me that he cannot come back to me in the future. Alyssa Watson is supposed to send it to me as soon as she receives it.

My Insurance Problems
Reviewed in Arizona on March 8, 2026
I really have not had much customer service interaction with the company, as I have had no claims in the over three years I have been with them. I have called twice to see about lowering my monthly rate, but unless I want to change my coverage, there is no way. It's strange how my monthly rate keeps going up each month little by little. It started with my Jeep Cherokee. The first month the rate was $72, and three years later it was over $90 a month, and this was with no claims at all. Now with my new car, the rate each month has gone up again. It’s now over $114 this last month, and I have only owned the car for 4 months.

Looking ahead, Insurify data scientists project a modest 0.8% increase in 2026 — a relatively steady outlook for the Grand Canyon State.

Arizona car insurance requirements

Arizona drivers must have car insurance that meets the state’s minimum liability coverage requirements. Arizona law requires liability insurance for any vehicle you drive on public roads, including cars, motorcycles, golf carts, and mopeds.[1]

Here are Arizona’s minimum coverage requirements:

  • Bodily injury liability: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident

  • Property damage liability: $15,000 per accident

If you won’t be driving in Arizona for a while, Arizona allows you to temporarily de-insure (stop carrying insurance for) a vehicle. Visit the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division (AZ MVD) website to follow the state’s de-insurance process.

Car insurance rates across Arizona cities

Car insurance rates change by location within Arizona. Premiums in larger cities, such as Glendale, are often higher than in smaller cities, like Lake Havasu, due to higher rates of car accidents, theft, and other location-specific factors.

Arizona car insurance FAQs

Shopping for car insurance in Arizona can raise many questions. The answers below can help you better understand your options before you compare Arizona auto insurance quotes.

  • What is the cheapest car insurance in Arizona?

Just Pay-Per-Mile is the cheapest car insurance company in Arizona, with liability rates averaging $62 per month, according to Insurify data. Your actual cost will vary based on factors like age, location, and driving history.

  • Is $100 per month normal for car insurance?

Depending on where you live and the coverage you choose, $100 per month for car insurance may be normal. For context, the national monthly average for liability car insurance is $99. On average, Arizona drivers pay $94 per month for liability coverage.

  • Why is AZ car insurance so expensive?

Arizona car insurance rates aren’t expensive compared to the national average. Car insurance costs can be higher if you’re in an area with more traffic congestion, higher rates of accidents, or higher repair costs. Personal factors like your driving history, age, and credit history can also affect whether your rates are more expensive.

  • How can you lower your car insurance in Arizona?

One of the best ways to lower your Arizona car insurance premiums is by comparing rates from several insurers at least once a year. Other ways to reduce your costs in Arizona include keeping your driving record free of violations, adjusting your coverage levels, choosing a higher deductible, and taking advantage of car insurance discounts.

  • What auto insurance is mandatory in Arizona?

Arizona law requires all drivers to have minimum liability coverage of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $15,000 per accident for property damage. The Arizona Department of Transportation’s Motor Vehicle Division enforces these requirements, and failure to meet them could lead to suspension of a driver’s license and vehicle registration.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
