Best car insurance companies for seniors in Arizona

Arizona has long been a retirement-friendly state, with a 2.5% income tax rate for all residents and tax-free Social Security benefits.[1] It’s not surprising, then, that nearly 21% of the state’s population is older than 65.

Senior drivers in Arizona can generally find affordable car insurance from many good insurers, and comparing quotes is the best way to find the coverage you need at the right price.

State Farm Premiums Aren’t Great
First, I had to pick something above for claims, but I’ve never had a claim. Next, State Farm has raised rates so much it’s crazy. I drive under 100 miles a year, so no insurance is priced right for my habits. But I lease and need full insurance with high limits. I have an 850 FICO score, no claims in 20 years, and only one driver. I dropped State Farm for Progressive.

How we chose the best car insurance companies for seniors in Arizonaexpand/collapse

Our editorial team analyzed our proprietary data, more than 80,000 verified user reviews, and third-party industry ratings to choose the best insurers for senior drivers in Arizona. We also weighed rate affordability for senior drivers, coverage options, available senior-friendly and senior-specific discounts, customer satisfaction rankings, customer service reviews, and financial strength.

How much does car insurance for seniors cost in Arizona?

Arizona drivers in their 60s pay an average of $76 per month for liability coverage and $136 per month for full coverage. These rates are nearly 23% lower than the average rates Arizona drivers in their 30s pay, according to Insurify data.

Older drivers in their 60s and 70s typically pay the lowest rates on auto insurance policies. Seniors are less likely to be high-risk drivers, and older drivers also tend to have lower annual mileage.

But older drivers can also experience physical and cognitive changes that may affect their driving. To address this, Arizona requires drivers older than 65 to renew their licenses in person and undergo a mandatory vision exam as part of the renewal process every five years.[2]

Insurance rates in Arizona begin to increase for older drivers around age 70 because of higher accident risks. In 2024 (the latest year for which data is available), drivers older than 75 were responsible for 6.83% of all fatal accidents, 4.32% of accidents that caused injury, and 3.58% of property damage only accidents, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.[3]

In the graph below, you can see how rates differ for Arizona senior drivers in their 60s, 70s, and 80s.

Car insurance discounts for senior drivers in Arizona

Insurance companies offer discounts that can help senior drivers keep their premiums affordable. While some car insurance discounts may be available to any policyholder, others may require you to meet eligibility requirements. Here are some of the senior-friendly discounts to check for:

  • Low-mileage discount: More than 1.25 million Arizonans are retired, according to the Social Security Administration. That means they’re probably not commuting anymore. Senior drivers putting low annual mileage on their vehicles can look into low-mileage discounts, which might include pay-per-mile or usage-based insurance.

  • Defensive driver discount: Under Arizona law, insurers may offer you a discount for voluntarily taking a defensive driving course. AARP offers online and in-person defensive driving courses geared toward older drivers.

  • Multi-policy discount: Up to 22% of Arizonans aged 25 to 34 live with their parents, according to an analysis by Pew Research. You can save money with a multi-policy discount by purchasing everyone’s policy from the same insurer.

  • Good student discount: If you’re among the reported 62,000-plus Arizona grandparents raising their grandchildren, the good student discount could help make adding your grandkid as a driver to your policy more affordable.

How to get cheap car insurance for Arizona seniors

The simplest and easiest way for senior drivers to find cheap car insurance in Arizona is to compare quotes from multiple companies. Here are some additional strategies for finding affordable auto insurance quotes:

  • Take a defensive driving course. In addition to a potential discount, you’ll learn important strategies for safe driving that can help keep your driving record clean and your premiums low.

  • Switch to pay-per-mile coverage. If you’re among the 1.25 million retirees living in Arizona, choosing a pay-per-mile or usage-based insurance policy can help you take advantage of your lower annual mileage.

  • Consider more than the minimum coverage. Arizona’s minimum car insurance law requires you to carry only $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident in bodily injury liability coverage and $15,000 per accident in property damage liability coverage.[4] But most experts recommend buying more than the minimum. While having high coverage limits will increase your premiums, it could save you a lot of money in the event of an accident.

  • Consider uninsured motorist coverage. Nearly 12% of drivers on Arizona roads are uninsured, according to the Insurance Research Council. Purchasing this coverage protects you in case of an accident with one of these uninsured drivers.

Expert’s insight

Arizona requires insurers to include uninsured motorist coverage in every policy but allows drivers to reject it in writing. I always advise people to take this optional coverage, because it can help get you back on the road if someone without insurance causes an accident.

Car insurance rates for senior drivers in Arizona by city

Where you live in Arizona makes a difference in how much you pay for auto insurance. Phoenix and nearby Laveen are the two most expensive places in Arizona for senior auto insurance. The metro area that includes both of these cities had the third-highest population growth rate in the nation in 2025. That level of population growth affects the number of drivers on the road, which can increase insurance costs.

The cheapest city for car insurance is Lake Havasu City, which has less than 60,000 residents. More than 35% of those residents are older than age 65. Between the smaller population and the higher percentage of seniors — who are less likely to engage in risky driving behaviors — older drivers in Lake Havasu pay lower premiums, on average.

Check out the average monthly rates for seniors in Arizona cities in the table below.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 250 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
