Agent Tip: Is liability-only insurance sufficient for drivers in Arizona?

The biggest mistake drivers make with liability-only coverage is choosing it just because it’s cheaper. If replacing your car after a total loss would strain your budget, the monthly savings may not be worth the risk.

State Farm Premiums Aren’t Great
First, I had to pick something above for claims, but I’ve never had a claim. Next, State Farm has raised rates so much it’s crazy. I drive under 100 miles a year, so no insurance is priced right for my habits. But I lease and need full insurance with high limits. I have an 850 FICO score, no claims in 20 years, and only one driver. I dropped State Farm for Progressive.

How we chose the best companiesexpand/collapse

We evaluated insurers operating in Arizona using a combination of Insurify customer reviews, financial strength ratings, claims satisfaction studies, complaint ratios, coverage options, and pricing data. We also considered factors particularly relevant to Arizona drivers, including traffic and urban congestion, road accidents, and the availability of local agents throughout the state.

How much is car insurance in Arizona?

The average cost of car insurance in Arizona is $91 per month for liability coverage and $163 for full coverage — both below the national monthly averages of $98 and $187.

Arizona is less densely populated than the U.S. average and has shorter commute times. The state has recorded a drop in auto thefts and crash fatalities in recent years, which could also lower costs.

While Arizona can experience flash flooding from monsoons, it doesn’t have hurricanes and coastal flooding like Gulf Coast states do.

Why you should compare car insurance quotes in Arizona

Arizona has a competitive insurance market, so you can often save money by comparing quotes from multiple insurers. Each company weighs location, age, vehicle type, and driving history differently, so rates can vary, even for the same driver.

These tips can help you get quotes that more closely reflect what you’d pay:

  • Ask every insurer for the same coverage (including add-ons like medical payments coverage), deductible, and limits, so you’re comparing quotes accurately.

  • Ask whether your policy caps coverage for family members at Arizona’s state minimum, even if you purchase higher liability limits.

  • Review your Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange (C.L.U.E.) report for any mistakes that could affect your eligibility and price.

Arizona car insurance requirements

Arizona drivers must meet the state’s minimum auto insurance requirements. Arizona law requires liability insurance for any vehicle you drive on public roads, including cars, motorcycles, golf carts, and mopeds.

Below are Arizona’s minimum coverage requirements:[1]

  • Bodily injury liability: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident

  • Property damage liability: $15,000 per accident

Driving without coverage in Arizona can result in a license suspension and an SR-22 insurance requirement for three years after reinstatement.[2]

If you won’t be driving in Arizona for a while, Arizona allows you to temporarily de-insure (stop carrying insurance for) a vehicle. Visit the Arizona Department of Transportation’s Motor Vehicle Division (AZ MVD) website to follow the state’s de-insurance process.

How to find the cheapest Arizona car insurance

Arizona car insurance costs less than the national average, according to Insurify data. The tips below can help you lower your car insurance premiums even further:

  • Shop around. Arizona has almost 1,800 licensed companies offering insurance across all lines, giving you plenty of options when shopping for coverage. Comparing quotes is the best way for Arizona drivers to find cheap car insurance.

  • Bundle multiple policies. About 67% of homes in Arizona are owner-occupied, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Most insurers offer a discount for bundling your home and auto insurance together.

  • Complete a defensive driving course. If you get a ticket in Arizona, you can attend a defensive driving program to keep points off your license. Otherwise, convictions stay on your record for five years.[3]

  • Work on your credit. Arizona’s average credit score of 709 is below the national average of 713. Arizona allows insurers to use your credit-based insurance score, so improving poor credit could lower your rate.

  • Ask about a low-mileage discount. The average Arizona driver logs 9,157 miles annually, according to Insurify data. If you drive less than that — for example, if you’re retired or work from home — you may qualify for a reduced premium.

  • Check for a mature-driver discount. If you’re 55 or older, Arizona law allows insurers to offer a rate reduction for completing an approved accident-prevention course. It’s not required by law, though, so confirm whether your insurer participates.

Find quotes for your driver profile

Insurers consider your age, credit history, and driving record when determining your rate. Young drivers and high-risk drivers, such as those with driving under the influence (DUI) convictions, speeding tickets, or at-fault accidents, tend to have the highest premiums. Compare average quotes for Arizona drivers with similar situations to yours below.

How car insurance costs have changed in Arizona

Arizona saw insurance costs rise for a few years after the pandemic due to riskier driving and higher medical and auto repair costs. The state finally began to see some relief from price hikes during the latter half of 2024, once insurers’ margins improved.

Tariffs still haven’t fully hit repair costs, though, which could affect Arizona’s insurance rates in 2026. Insurify projections show a less-than-1% increase, bringing the average annual premium to $1,813 by year-end.

Personal factors like your driving history, age, and credit history can also affect whether your rates are more expensive.

How can you lower your car insurance in Arizona?

One of the best ways to lower your Arizona car insurance premiums is by comparing rates from several insurers at least once a year. Other ways to reduce your costs in Arizona include keeping your driving record free of violations, adjusting your coverage levels, choosing a higher deductible, and taking advantage of car insurance discounts.

What auto insurance is mandatory in Arizona?

Arizona law requires all drivers to have minimum liability coverage of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $15,000 per accident for property damage. The Arizona Department of Transportation’s Motor Vehicle Division enforces these requirements, and failure to meet them could lead to suspension of a driver’s license and vehicle registration.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 250 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
