Massachusetts drivers pay an average of $176 per month for car insurance compared to the national average of $158 per month. Safeco and Liberty Mutual offer the cheapest car insurance in Massachusetts. The exact amount you’ll pay for car insurance varies based on your unique situation, but comparing quotes is the best way to find cheap rates.

The state had a relatively low number of fatal crashes in 2021, according to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.[1] The U.S. had a fatal crash rate of 12.7 per 100,000 people, while Massachusetts had a lower fatality rate of 6 per 100,000 people. This may partially explain why Massachusetts drivers earn lower average rates than other U.S. drivers.

Here’s what you need to know about finding cheap car insurance in the Bay State.

Quick Facts
  • Massachusetts drivers pay an average of $115 per month for minimum coverage insurance and $238 per month for a full-coverage policy.

  • Because Massachusetts is a no-fault state, drivers need to have personal injury protection coverage to pay for their medical bills after a car accident.[2]

  • Car insurance companies in Massachusetts can’t use your credit history when determining premiums.[3]

  • Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 28,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

Travelers has been reliable for a very long time. However, they are more expensive than most carriers. I stay with them because I have been with them for decades. Lately, I have begun to suspect that they would not favor my loyalty. So, I am shopping for a less expensive policy.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Massachusetts

Car insurance companies look at different factors to determine your premiums. Some common factors include your driving record, age, location, credit history, and marital status.

The good news is that you can implement strategies to earn cheaper insurance rates:

  • Shop around. Comparing quotes from multiple insurance companies can help you find the best rate for your situation.

  • Raise your deductible. Setting a higher deductible typically leads to lower premiums. If you can afford to cover a higher deductible, consider increasing yours.

  • Look for a discount. Most insurance companies offer discount opportunities. It never hurts to see if you qualify.[4]

  • Opt for minimum coverage. A liability-only insurance policy is typically the cheapest coverage you can buy. But if you have an accident, you’ll have to pay for your vehicle repairs out of pocket.

Cheapest liability-only car insurance in Massachusetts: Safeco

Liability car insurance includes bodily injury liability and property damage liability coverage. This type of insurance policy kicks in to help you pay for damages or injuries you cause others in an accident. In Massachusetts, minimum coverage includes personal injury protection for your injuries as well.

Safeco offers the cheapest average rates for liability-only car insurance, at $85 per month. The table below shows the average quotes for liability-only policies from insurance companies in Massachusetts.

Cheapest full-coverage car insurance in Massachusetts: Safeco

Full-coverage car insurance policies provide more coverage and financial protection than liability-only policies. On top of liability coverage, a full-coverage policy includes collision and comprehensive coverage. After an incident, this type of policy will help you repair or replace your own vehicle.

If you would struggle to pay for repairs on your own after an accident, you should consider purchasing a full-coverage policy. Some drivers need to carry this type of policy if they lease or finance their vehicle.

In the table below, you can find average quotes for full-coverage policies from the cheapest insurers in Massachusetts.

Car insurance requirements in Massachusetts

Massachusetts requires drivers to carry a minimum amount of insurance to drive on public roadways. In this no-fault state, you must carry personal injury protection (PIP) and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage in addition to bodily injury and property damage liability coverage.[5]

Here are the specific minimum car insurance requirements for Massachusetts drivers:

Coverage
Minimum Requirements
Bodily injury liability$20,000 per person / $40,000 per accident
Property damage liability$5,000 per accident
Personal injury protection (PIP)$8,000 per accident
Uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury$20,000 per person / $40,000 per accident

Most people can benefit from purchasing coverage beyond the minimum required insurance. Common optional coverages to consider include:

    Collision coverage

Collision insurance helps pay for repairs to your vehicle after an accident. This includes collisions with other cars and stationary objects.

  • illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/162273/x/665da91bf7/comprehensive-coverage.svg

    Comprehensive coverage

Comprehensive insurance helps pay for repairs or replacement after something other than a collision damages your vehicle, like theft or vandalism.

  • illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/162273/100x100/9997698e9e/emergency-roadside-service.svg

    Roadside assistance coverage

Specifics vary by insurer, but roadside assistance coverage typically includes services like lock-outs, jump-starts, tire changes, towing, and more.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an incident

Having a traffic violation on your record can increase your insurance costs. Insurers view incidents like speeding tickets, driving under the influence charges, and at-fault accidents as indicators of future risk. In general, an insurance company will respond to this increased risk by charging higher insurance premiums.

Massachusetts is one of the most densely populated states in the country. With more people living in tight quarters, traffic congestion can lead to more accidents and higher car insurance rates. On average, Massachusetts drivers with an incident on their record pay $220 per month.

The following sections provide a closer look at how an incident on your driving record can affect your insurance costs.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
