Minnesota drivers pay $152 per month for car insurance, compared to the national average of $158. Multiple factors contribute to the Star of the North’s higher insurance costs, including its severe winters, risky driving behaviors like speeding and not wearing seat belts, and the state’s no-fault insurance system.

Still, Minnesota drivers can find affordable car insurance from companies like Safeco, National General, and Progressive. Many of the top insurers in Minnesota offer discounts and other ways to lower your car insurance costs.

Quick Facts
  • Minnesota drivers pay $203 on average for full-coverage car insurance and $102 for liability-only policies.

  • Speeding, not using seat belts, and drunk or distracted driving were top factors in Minnesota traffic fatalities in 2021, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.[1]

  • Car insurance costs in nearby North Dakota are more affordable, with an average of $124 per month.

Why we picked this company

Safeco, a Liberty Mutual company, has been in business for nearly 100 years. Safeco stands out for some of its optional offerings. If your new car is less than a year old with under 150,000 miles, Safeco’s new vehicle replacement coverage pays the value of a comparable new car if yours is stolen or totaled. Safeco also offers cash back for policyholders who remain claims-free over a six-month review period, as well as a diminishing deductible for being claims-free. The company also scored above average for customer satisfaction in J.D. Power’s 2023 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study.

Pros
  • Pays cash back to customers who remain claims-free

  • Many options for customizing car insurance

  • Accident forgiveness available

Cons
  • May not be the cheapest option for drivers with infractions on their records

  • Customer reviews indicate room for improvement in customer service

  • Higher-than-average number of complaints with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Minnesota

While Drivers in the Land of 10,000 Lakes can’t skip car insurance, that doesn’t mean you have to overpay for this necessary expense. A few savings strategies include:[1]

  • Ask for a discount. Most insurance companies offer some discounts that can potentially lower your rates. Ask your insurance agent what discounts you might be eligible for.

  • Raise your deductible. Opting for a higher deductible usually leads to lower insurance premiums. But this is only a good option if you can afford a higher deductible if you need to file a claim.

  • Compare quotes. Shopping around to get quotes from multiple insurance companies can help you lock in the best rates. Since your situation can change over time, it’s a good idea to compare quotes at least once a year.

Cheapest liability-only car insurance in Minnesota: Safeco

Liability-only car insurance protects your wallet from the fallout of property damage and bodily injury liability. After you cause an accident, liability-only car insurance helps cover the cost of repairing the other person’s vehicle and their medical bills.[2]

This more limited insurance coverage often comes with the most affordable price tag. But liability coverage won’t help you pay for your own vehicle repair costs or medical expenses. The cheapest insurer for liability-only car insurance in Minnesota is Safeco, with an average cost of $63 per month.

Below is a breakdown of average liability insurance costs by car insurance company in Minnesota:

Cheapest insurers for liability-only

Disclaimer: Table data sourced from real-time quotes from Insurify's 50-plus partner insurance providers. Actual quotes may vary based on the policy buyer's unique driver profile.

Cheapest full-coverage car insurance in Minnesota: Safeco

Full-coverage car insurance comes with more robust protection for your wallet. In addition to liability coverage, it includes both comprehensive and collision coverage. After an accident, collision coverage can help you get back on the road with vehicle repairs or a replacement vehicle. Comprehensive insurance covers other incidents, like a tree falling on your car or a natural disaster.

Drivers with an auto loan or lease might be required to carry full coverage. But even if you don’t have to carry this coverage, it might offer the right amount of protection for your wallet. Safeco provides the cheapest full-coverage insurance in Minnesota, with monthly rates averaging $121.

Car insurance requirements in Minnesota

Minnesota is a no-fault state, meaning if you get into an accident, your insurance company will cover your costs, no matter who’s at fault for the crash. States with no-fault insurance systems can have higher insurance rates than those with at-fault systems, since no-fault states typically require additional types of coverage besides just liability.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an incident

Driving-related incidents — like speeding tickets, DUIs, and at-fault accidents — can have a big effect on your car insurance costs.[4]

When drivers have incidents on their record, they have a greater probability of filing insurance claims, leading to premium rate adjustments,” says Marianne Evans, vice president of claims at Hoffman Brown Company. “Incidents can result in additional expenses, such as repair costs, medical bills, or legal fees, which prompt insurance companies to modify their rates accordingly,” Evans cautions.

Ultimately, Minnesota drivers with a moving violation should expect to pay more for car insurance than a driver with a clean record.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an at-fault accident: Safeco

No one wants to get into a car accident. Beyond the stress that comes with an accident, drivers typically face higher insurance premiums after an at-fault accident. The reason is that insurance companies might consider you a high-risk driver.

If you live in Minnesota and have an accident on your driving record, you’ll pay about $154 per month for liability-only coverage.

Car insurance in Minnesota costs $203 per month for full coverage and $102 per month for liability-only coverage, according to Insurify data.

  • Who has the cheapest car insurance in Minnesota?

Safeco, National General, and Progressive have the cheapest car insurance in Minnesota. Their monthly liability-only rates average $63, $64, and $88, respectively. But the cheapest insurer for you will depend on multiple factors, including your age, ZIP code, type of car you drive, and coverage levels you choose.

  • What are the best car insurance companies in Minnesota?

With an above-average J.D. Power customer satisfaction rating, A.M. Best financial strength rating of A++ (Superior), and an IQ Score of 4.4 out of 5, State Farm is the best car insurance company in Minnesota. Other top insurers include Auto-Owners and USAA.

  • Is it illegal to drive without insurance in Minnesota?

Yes. It’s illegal to drive without insurance in Minnesota. If you’re caught driving without the state-minimum required insurance, you could face fines of up to $1,000, up to 90 days in jail, and suspension of your license and registration.

  • Does insurance follow the car or the driver in Minnesota?

In most cases, car insurance will follow the car instead of the driver in Minnesota. This holds true for liability coverage, personal injury protection (PIP), and uninsured motorist coverage. This means that even if you’re not at fault for an accident, you must use your own insurance policy before being paid by the at-fault driver’s insurer.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
