Average cost of home and auto insurance in New York

New York homeowners insurance premiums are typically lower than the national average cost of home insurance. New York homeowners pay an average of $1,368 per year for coverage, while the national annual average is $2,868.

New York has a lower hurricane risk than other coastal states, which helps keep rates lower. New York also has a low wildfire risk and many older brick homes, which burn more slowly than modern wooden homes.[1] [2]

But New York car insurance isn’t as affordable. On average, full-coverage car insurance in New York costs $243 per month. That’s typically well above the national monthly average of $186.

New York’s harsh winters, population density, and tourism and freight traffic all contribute to the state’s higher car insurance rates.[3] [4]

The table below shows average annual homeowners and car insurance rates in New York, according to Insurify data.

  • Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 55,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

Absolutely terrible!
I had my first claim in sixty-five years for under $1,000. What I went through was unbelievable. I bet I spoke with five or more agents to try and settle my claim. I finally said I was getting a lawyer, and they paid me. It went on for two months. I will never use them again and am switching companies.

Why we picked this company

USAA is the best home and auto insurance company in New York for military families. The company offers affordable rates and good customer service for military members, veterans, and their families. That’s especially important in New York state, which has one of the nation’s largest veteran populations.

Pros
  • Low car insurance rates in New York

  • AM Best financial strength rating of A++ (Superior)

  • Excellent home and auto customer satisfaction ratings

Cons
  • Above-average number of customer complaints

  • Lower multi-policy discount than other insurers

  • Available only to military families and veterans

  • Our editorial team analyzed regional and national auto insurance companies that sell policies in New York to assess which offer the best rates, coverage options, customer service, and savings to customers. We prioritized competitive rates, homeownership discounts or bundling options, 24/7 customer service, low-mileage discounts or programs, safe driving discounts, and specialty or supplemental coverages.

What affects home and auto insurance rates in New York?

Several factors affect home and auto insurance rates in New York, including:

  • Winter weather: Snow makes roads slicker and decreases visibility throughout New York. In February 2026, New York City experienced one of its most intense blizzards, and Buffalo averages more than 91 inches of snow every winter.[5] Severe weather usually increases rates.

  • Low fire risk: Wildfires are less common in New York than in other parts of the country.[6] Many of New York’s homes were built roughly a century or more ago, and older brick buildings are typically more fire-resistant. That helps keep home insurance costs in New York down.

  • Population density: New York is home to more than 20 million people, making it the eighth-most densely populated state in the U.S. That means more drivers on the streets and an increased risk of collisions. More accidents lead to higher auto insurance costs.

  • Smaller home size: Your home’s size affects your home insurance costs. Larger homes are usually more expensive to insure because they cost more to rebuild.

Is bundling home and auto insurance worth it in New York?

Bundling your home and auto insurance in New York can save you significantly. Many insurers in the state offer discounts of 10%–25% when you bundle policies. That’s especially important for car insurance because New York has some of the highest rates in the U.S.

That said, bundling your home and auto coverage keeps you with the same insurer. That means you could miss out on lower rates for separate coverage from other insurers.

If you need specialized coverage, like flood or rideshare insurance, you might find everything you need with a single insurer. Separate policies could make more sense.

Many insurers also let you bundle car and renters insurance for similar discounts.

  • How can you bundle home and auto insurance in New York?

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
