On average, North Dakota drivers pay $119 per month for auto insurance, which is less than the national average of $154 per month. The state’s relatively low population density contributes to its relatively low car insurance rates — it ranks 47th in the country, with 779,261 residents in 69,000 square miles of land.[1] [2]

Besides your location and the insurer you choose, other factors that affect car insurance costs include your age, driving record, credit history, and more. Here’s what you should know about how auto insurance premiums fluctuate based on these unique factors to find the cheapest coverage for you in North Dakota.

Quick Facts
  • North Dakota is a no-fault state, so drivers must purchase personal injury protection, plus a minimum amount of liability, uninsured motorist, and underinsured motorist coverage.[3]

  • On average, North Dakota drivers pay $85 per month for liability-only car insurance, which is higher than the average premiums in neighboring South Dakota, but lower than Minnesota at $63 and $104 respectively.

  • North Dakota law allows insurers to consider your credit history when determining premiums.[4]

  • Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 28,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

Unsatisfactory Service

Getting in touch with a live representative is almost impossible, and when you do, they seem uninformed. I was charged $300 for a policy that provided no coverage. It felt like they were getting paid for doing absolutely nothing.

I loved The General. I had them for 3 years. However, I found better rates elsewhere and I'm now paying only half of what The General was offering, so I had to switch. If they had lower rates, I would have stayed with them.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in North Dakota

You can’t completely avoid the cost of car insurance, but you can take action to lock in the best possible price. Take advantage of the strategies below:

  • Ask for a discount. Most insurers offer some discount opportunities. A few popular discounts reward safe drivers and good students. It’s a good idea to ask if you qualify for savings.

  • Bundle policies. Households that bundle multiple policies can often earn savings. For example, you can earn a discount by getting your homeowners insurance, life insurance, or other additional coverages through the same insurance company you buy auto coverage from.

  • Increase your deductible. When you increase your deductible, you typically earn lower car insurance premiums. Make sure you can afford to cover the new deductible before moving forward.

  • Opt for minimum coverage. The coverage level you choose affects your annual premiums. If you feel comfortable buying liability-only car insurance, you can save money on coverage.

  • Shop around. When you compare quotes from multiple insurance companies, you can determine which offers the best price for your situation.[5]

Cheapest liability-only car insurance in North Dakota

Liability-only auto insurance covers the vehicle damage or bodily injuries you cause to another party in an accident. For example, your liability insurance might help cover the other driver’s medical bills. This insurance option is often the cheapest coverage level. This type of policy won’t cover your vehicle or medical payments after an accident.[6]

The average rate for liability-only coverage in North Dakota is $85 per month. Compare the cheapest options for liability coverage in North Dakota below.

Cheapest full-coverage car insurance in North Dakota

In addition to liability coverage, a full-coverage policy includes both comprehensive and collision coverage. Collision coverage helps you repair or replace your vehicle after an accident. Comprehensive coverage helps pay for repairs after a non-collision incident, like a fallen tree or a hailstorm.

Your auto lender, if you have one, may require you to purchase full coverage. But even if you don’t need to carry it, the increased coverage can help you protect your vehicle. On average, full-coverage insurance costs $153 per month in North Dakota.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an incident

Occasional mistakes on the road happen, and they can turn into incidents on your record. Speeding tickets, driving under the influence charges, and at-fault accidents can lead insurance companies to consider you a high-risk driver. In general, this means drivers with an incident pay more for car insurance than drivers with a clean record.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with a speeding ticket

Despite its relatively small population, North Dakota leads the nation in street racers, according to Insurify data. Nearly 70 out of every 100,000 North Dakota drivers have a street racing violation on their records.

When you get a speeding ticket, the attached fine is only the first cost you face. You’ll likely also end up paying a bit more for car insurance — especially if you have multiple or frequent speeding tickets.

After a speeding ticket, North Dakota residents pay $248 on average per month for full coverage, and $138 for liability coverage.

Here’s a look at the average monthly quotes offered by North Dakota insurers for drivers with a speeding ticket.

But around the age of 70, many drivers begin to see slight increases in their car insurance prices because of decreased faculties.

Seniors who hold liability-only insurance pay on average $73 per month in North Dakota, and $131 for full-coverage insurance.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
