The average monthly cost of car insurance in the state of Utah is $146, which is lower than the national average of $154. The Beehive State is home to 3.4 million residents, but it has a low population density of 39.7 people per square mile.[1] This low population density may explain why Utah drivers pay affordable average rates.

Here’s what you need to know about finding cheap car insurance in Utah.

Quick Facts
  • Utah drivers pay $108 per month for liability coverage and $183 for full-coverage insurance, on average.

  • USAA, Root, and Auto-Owners are the cheapest insurers for liability insurance.

  • Utah is a no-fault state, and drivers must carry a minimum amount of personal injury protection (PIP) coverage.

  • Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 28,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

Disappointing and inflexible service

My experience with this company has been disappointing, especially this second time around. I would suggest considering other options. From my recent interactions, they have been dismissive and argumentative. I have already started finalizing my next premium with another company. I'm perplexed as to how they receive praise when they treat clients in this manner.

Cheapest liability-only car insurance in Utah: USAA

Utah requires drivers to purchase a minimum amount of liability insurance. This minimum level of coverage for bodily injury and property damage covers the expenses for the other driver if you cause an accident. Unfortunately, liability coverage doesn’t pay for your vehicle damages, which can leave you in a vulnerable spot.[3] However, it’s the cheapest coverage option.

Here are the cheapest liability-only car insurance options in Utah, starting with the lowest rate of $63 per month from USAA.

Cheapest full-coverage car insurance in Utah: USAA

Full-coverage insurance includes liability, collision, and comprehensive coverages. In addition, you can look into more coverage options you might want included in your policy. Full-coverage insurance differs from liability coverage because it offers more expansive vehicle protections. And your lender may require you to buy it if you finance or lease your vehicle.

Utah drivers who want higher levels of protection should look into affordable full-coverage options from the following companies.

Car insurance requirements in Utah

Most states require drivers to meet minimum coverage requirements. In Utah, drivers must obtain minimum amounts of bodily injury and property damage liability coverage.[4] As a no-fault state, Utah also requires PIP coverage so drivers can file a claim with their own insurance company to cover their medical costs in the event of an incident, regardless of fault.

The specific coverage limits required in the state will increase starting in 2025, according to the Utah State Legislature.[5] Here are the state’s current requirements:

Coverage
Minimum Requirements
Bodily injury liability$25,000 per person / $65,000 per accident
Property damage liability$15,000 per accident
Personal injury protection (PIP)$3,000

It can be a good idea to consider buying additional coverages to provide more protection. Common optional coverages include the following:

  • illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/162273/x/169fdfde11/liability-coverage.svg

    Collision coverage

If you have an accident, liability coverage pays for the other driver’s damage. Getting collision coverage provides you with protection and covers any damage to your vehicle.

  • illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/162273/x/665da91bf7/comprehensive-coverage.svg

    Comprehensive coverage

Non-collision events can damage your vehicle, such as weather, theft, or falling rocks. Comprehensive coverage fills in the gap and covers you in these non-collision incidents.

    Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage

Despite state laws, some Utah drivers are uninsured. If you have an accident with an uninsured or underinsured motorist, this type of coverage will help protect you.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an incident

Your driving record is a key factor for car insurance companies when determining rates. Having a clean driving record will help you qualify for lower rates. The presence of one or more incidents on your record — such as a speeding ticket, at-fault accident, or driving under the influence (DUI) charge — can increase your premiums because of the elevated risk you pose.[6]

Premium increases vary based on your insurance company, as well as the severity and frequency of the incidents on your record. On average, Utah drivers with a past incident pay $181 per month for car insurance.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an at-fault accident: USAA

Aside from potential injuries and property damage, having an at-fault accident can also result in higher insurance premiums. Your insurer will view you as a higher-risk driver with a greater chance of future accidents. Utah drivers with an at-fault accident might want to compare quotes at the time of renewal and consider the following car insurance companies.

Utah drivers with a past at-fault accident pay an average of $149 per month for liability coverage. You can see how an accident affects quotes compared to a clean driving record.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with a DUI: USAA

Whether under the influence of alcohol or some other substance, a DUI is a major offense. Utah drivers with a DUI face license suspension and higher car insurance premiums.[7] Car insurance companies will view you as a high-risk driver if you have a DUI conviction. In turn, you’ll pay more for car insurance when you can drive again.

Drivers in the state with a past DUI pay an average of $171 per month for liability car insurance. If you have a DUI in Utah, the following companies offer the most competitive quotes.

Cheapest car insurance for seniors: USAA

Your age has a significant effect on your car insurance premiums. Getting older comes with more driving experience and cheaper car insurance rates. In fact, senior drivers around retirement age typically qualify for the lowest rates when compared to other age groups.

Premiums decrease between the ages of 35 and 69. At about 70, senior drivers may face an increase in insurance costs due to aging-related risk factors, like diminishing vision and coordination.

Below, you can see which insurance companies offer the cheapest quotes for senior drivers.

Cheapest car insurance for teens: USAA

Due to a lack of driving experience, young drivers generally face much higher car insurance rates than other age groups. Teen drivers have more incidents of fatal car crashes and a greater likelihood of engaging in risky driving behaviors, such as speeding or driving under the influence.

To earn the lowest rates, it’s smart for teens to join their parents’ car insurance policy, have a car with updated safety features, and look into potential good student discounts.

Here, you can see the most affordable car insurance options for teens for both liability and full coverage.

Utah car insurance quotes by credit tier

The state of Utah allows auto insurance companies to consider credit-based insurance scores for underwriting, but some restrictions apply. For example, insurers can’t use poor credit as the only reason to cancel an auto policy.

Drivers with excellent or good credit generally qualify for the best car insurance rates. On the other hand, drivers with poor credit typically have higher premiums. Here are the average full-coverage car insurance quotes for Utah drivers by credit tier.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
