Never Go With Direct
Never go through Direct. When you remove a vehicle from your policy, you’re required to pay for a whole extra month of insurance after it’s canceled, even though it’s not covered. So the vehicle is removed and no longer considered insured, but you still have to pay for it. Their customer service is horrible. Several times I requested a callback from a supervisor, and they never once tried to call me back. Very rarely do you get someone who speaks English and is easy to understand. Worst insurance company I’ve ever dealt with.

How we chose the best companiesexpand/collapse

We evaluated insurers operating in Washington using a combination of Insurify customer reviews, financial strength ratings, claims satisfaction studies, complaint ratios, coverage options, and pricing data. We also considered factors particularly relevant to Washington drivers, including tornado and hurricane risks, urban congestion, vehicle theft trends, and the availability of local agents throughout the state.

How much is car insurance in Washington?

Washington car insurance costs an average of $1,143 per year for liability-only coverage and $2,202 for full coverage. This is lower than the national annual averages of $1,183 for liability coverage and $2,242 for full coverage.

Heavy traffic around Seattle and Tacoma, especially on the Interstate 5 corridor, can increase the risk of accidents and lead to a higher claims rate. Washington also faces a high risk of wildfires, which have the potential to cause damage to vehicles across the state.[1]

Why you should compare car insurance quotes in Washington

Washington car insurance premiums can vary depending on your insurer, location, and driving profile. For example, drivers in congested cities like Seattle and Spokane may pay more than people living in smaller cities due to higher rates of accidents and theft.

Insurers also consider factors like your credit history and driving history, so shopping around for quotes will help you find the lowest rates. Here are some things you can do to get the most accurate quotes:[2]

  • Use the same coverage limits and deductible for each insurer.

  • Provide the correct ZIP code and annual mileage.

  • Include every driver and vehicle in your household.

  • Disclose any tickets or at-fault accidents on your driving record.

  • Ask insurers what discounts you might qualify for.

Washington car insurance requirements

Washington requires all drivers to meet minimum liability requirements and provide proof of insurance. Its bodily injury limits are common, but the property damage minimum is relatively low. Here’s an overview of Washington’s minimum coverage requirements:[3]

Coverage
Washington Requirement
Bodily injury liability$25,000 per person/$50,000 per accident
Property damage liability coverage$10,000

Personal injury protection (PIP) and uninsured and underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage aren’t mandatory, but state law requires insurers to offer them.[4] Drivers who don’t want PIP or UM/UIM coverage must waive them in writing.

Agent Tip: Is liability-only insurance enough in Washington?

“Washington’s minimum liability limits usually won’t cover the full cost of a serious accident. The cost of totaling another driver’s car would likely exceed the state’s $10,000 minimum coverage limit. You’d have to pay out of pocket for anything over your insurance limits. Consider increasing your coverage limits for extra protection. You can also opt for full-coverage car insurance. Full coverage includes liability coverage, as well as comprehensive and collision insurance for you and your vehicle.”

How to find the cheapest Washington car insurance

Comparing quotes from multiple insurers is the most effective way to find cheap Washington car insurance. Different insurers weigh factors like your location, credit, and driving history differently, so it’s a good idea to get at least three different quotes.

Here are some additional ways to lower your premium:

  • Consider regional insurers serving the Pacific Northwest in addition to national insurers like Allstate, Liberty Mutual, and Travelers.

  • Bundle your auto and homeowners or renters insurance to take advantage of bundling discounts.

  • Enroll in a safe-driving or low-mileage program for additional savings.

  • Increase your deductible. Just be sure you can afford the higher deductible amount if you need to file a claim.

  • If you’re 55 or older, you can complete an approved defensive driving course for an additional discount.[5]

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 250 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible
