The Great Deception
The licensed agent who prepared my commercial vehicle insurance has a serious deception problem. It felt like I was making a deal with the devil. She never gave me my quote, and she kept me off track with a bunch of nonsense for over two hours. I’d like someone to review that conversation from Thursday night when I purchased the insurance. The office staff was unprofessional and played obvious games and word tricks. I never thought GEICO would employ people like that or treat customers with so little respect.

Easiest Tennessee car insurance discounts to qualify for

Tennessee insurers offer several car insurance discounts that are easy to qualify for. For example, you can receive a discount for paying your policy bills on time or having safety features on your vehicle.

For senior drivers, Tennessee mandates a three-year premium reduction for drivers 55 and older who complete an accident prevention course.[1] The following table outlines some of the easiest discounts to receive in Tennessee:

Discount
Potential Savings
How to Qualify
Multi-policyUp to 25%Bundle auto with home or renters insurance from the same insurer
Continuous insuranceUp to 11%Maintain 25/50/25 coverage for six months with your current insurer before switching
PaperlessUp to 12%Receive your bill and other documents electronically
Auto payUp to 12% Sign up for automatic payments
Mature driver discount (55+)Up to 10%Complete an accident prevention course for a Tennessee-mandated premium reduction

How to maximize your Tennessee car insurance discounts

Tennessee drivers can use the tips below to help maximize discounts and save as much as possible on car insurance:

  • Ask your current insurer about discounts. Before shopping elsewhere, check whether your insurer offers a loyalty discount. Also, see if your insurer has a Tennessee-specific car insurance page — companies like State Farm and GEICO list discounts specific to Tennessee drivers.

  • Shop around. Compare quotes from several insurers rather than simply choosing the insurer with the most discounts. An insurer that only offers a few discounts may still have the lowest price. Tennessee has 2,116 licensed insurers across all lines, so you have a lot of options.[2]

  • Time your shopping with your driving record. Violations can stay on your Tennessee motor vehicle record (MVR) for three or 10 years, but insurers typically look back three to five years for safe driver discounts.[3] If violations are close to dropping off your MVR, waiting to switch insurers could mean bigger discounts.

  • Stack discounts. You can combine multiple discounts to save even more. For example, you might get a discount for bundling auto and homeowners insurance and a reduced premium from Tennessee’s mandatory mature driver discount.

How to apply car insurance discounts to your policy in Tennessee

Most discounts apply automatically during the quote process. Others require you to ask the insurer directly or provide proof. Below are the typical steps for applying discounts to your policy in Tennessee, though they can vary by insurer.

  1. Get accurate quotes. When you fill out your application, discounts like multi-policy, multi-vehicle, and paperless billing usually apply automatically.

  2. Submit any required documentation. Tennessee’s mature-driver discount, for example, may require a completion certificate from your course provider to receive reduced car insurance premiums.

  3. Request discounts that aren’t automatic. Some savings, like Tennessee’s right to a credit score refresh, require you to contact your insurer directly. Continuous insurance discounts may require proof of insurance from your previous insurer.

  4. Confirm you received the discount. Once your bill arrives, check that your insurer applied the discount correctly.

Cheapest car insurance for Tennessee drivers

The average cost of car insurance in Tennessee is $132 per month for full coverage. Liability coverage averages $60 per month, which includes bodily injury liability and property damage liability coverage to meet Tennessee’s financial responsibility law.

Tennessee car insurance costs well below the national average. Rates are also cheaper than in most of Tennessee’s neighboring states, including Kentucky, Georgia, and Alabama. Auto insurance is generally cheaper in Tennessee compared to the rest of the country due to the state’s lower cost of living and minimum car insurance requirements.

Tennessee drivers saw rate hikes beginning in 2023 due to increased speed limits and higher medical and auto repair costs. Insurance costs began to taper in the last half of 2024 and continued to trend downward through 2025. Insurify’s American Driver Report predicts a small $6 increase in the average annual premium in 2026.

The table below shows average quotes for liability and full coverage in Tennessee.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 250 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
