How we chose the best companiesexpand/collapse

We evaluated insurers operating in Maryland using a combination of Insurify customer reviews, financial strength ratings, claims satisfaction studies, complaint ratios, coverage options, and pricing data. We also considered factors particularly relevant to Maryland drivers, including urban congestion, vehicle theft trends, and the availability of local agents throughout the state.

How much is car insurance in Maryland?

The average cost of car insurance in Maryland is $192 per month for liability coverage and $303 for full coverage, according to Insurify data. Drivers in Maryland pay significantly higher rates than the U.S. national averages of $98 for liability coverage and $187 for full-coverage insurance.

With roughly 3,200 miles of coastline, Maryland’s geography makes it especially prone to flooding.[1] That’s one of the reasons rates are higher in Maryland than in neighboring states, like Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Why you should compare car insurance quotes in Maryland

Car insurance rates in Maryland depend on many factors, including your ZIP code, age, credit score, driving record, and vehicle type. Maryland insurance companies also charge different rates for the same amount of coverage.

To find the cheapest auto insurance in Maryland, it’s a good idea to compare personalized rates from several insurers. Below are a few tips for getting the most accurate quotes:

  • Compare rates for the same type of coverage (full coverage or liability only).

  • Use the same deductible when getting rates for full coverage.

  • Enter your vehicle identification number (VIN), rather than just the make and model.

  • Answer truthfully when asked about your driving record, mileage, and accident history.

Maryland car insurance requirements

Like most states, Maryland requires a minimum amount of liability car insurance to legally drive. The Maryland car insurance requirements are:[2]

Coverage Type
Maryland Minimum Requirement
Bodily injury liability$30,000 per person/$60,000 per accident
Property damage liability$15,000 per accident
Uninsured motorist bodily injury liability$30,000 per person/$60,000 per accident
Uninsured motorist property damage liability$15,000 per accident

Car insurance companies in Maryland must offer at least $2,500 in personal injury protection (PIP), which covers your medical expenses after an accident (regardless of fault) and 85% of lost wages due to your injuries.[3] However, drivers may waive PIP coverage.

Agent Tip: Does liability-only coverage offer enough protection?

“Liability-only coverage won’t pay to repair your car if you’re at fault in an accident. Unless you can afford to replace your car out of pocket, consider buying a policy with comprehensive and collision coverage, even if you choose high deductibles.”

How to find the cheapest Maryland car insurance

Below are some tips for getting cheap car insurance in Maryland:

  • Consider Maryland Auto Insurance. High-risk drivers in Maryland who can’t get insurance on the voluntary market can get guaranteed coverage through Maryland Auto Insurance.

  • Avoid tickets and accidents. More than 4% of Maryland drivers have a speeding ticket, and 5.27% have been in an accident, according to Insurify data. Having a clean driving record and avoiding violations and accidents can lower your premium.

  • Increase your deductible. Roughly 32% of Maryland drivers have a lien on their vehicle, according to Insurify data. Most lenders will require you to carry full coverage if you finance or lease your car. Choosing higher deductibles for comprehensive and collision coverage can lower your monthly premiums.

  • Drop coverages you no longer need. If you drive an older car that has depreciated significantly, you might be able to drop full coverage.

  • Improve your credit. Maryland insurers use credit-based insurance scores to calculate rates. Improving your credit could help you get a reduced premium.

Maryland car insurance FAQs

If you’re shopping for cheap car insurance in Maryland, below you’ll find additional information to help you compare quotes and coverage.

What is the cheapest auto insurance in Maryland?

Allstate has the cheapest average liability-only insurance rate in Maryland, at $116 per month. USAA has the lowest car insurance rate in Maryland for full coverage, at an average of $178 per month, according to Insurify data.

Is Maryland a no-fault state?

No, Maryland is an at-fault state. If you’re in an accident in Maryland, the at-fault driver’s insurance compensates the other person for their injuries and property damage.

What happened to the MAIF?

The Maryland Auto Insurance Fund (MAIF) is still around, but it was rebranded as Maryland Auto Insurance. It’s still the same organization that provides car insurance to Maryland drivers who can’t get coverage on the private market.

Do you need uninsured motorist coverage in Maryland?

Yes. Maryland requires all drivers to carry uninsured motorist coverage for bodily injuries and property damage. But you can file an uninsured motorist claim only if another driver is found to be 100% at fault for the collision.[4]

What is considered ‘full coverage’ in Maryland?

A full-coverage policy in Maryland typically includes liability insurance, collision insurance, comprehensive insurance, and uninsured motorist insurance. Some drivers choose to add other coverages, like medical payments or roadside assistance, for greater financial protection.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 250 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
