Poor
They constantly upgrade your policy by adding a higher deductible and uninsured motorist coverage, and when you call them, they say that it’s just the way it is. As a policyholder, I had to be the one to advocate, investigate, and say, “No, you can’t make these changes without my permission.” I ended up lowering my own bill by almost $30, so why should I even have a broker or stay with State Farm if I had to do all the work myself? I’m very unhappy with State Farm.

After one vandalism claim, my rate went up 62%. A $2,000 claim ended up costing me about $5,000 more per year. That feels ridiculous, so I’m dropping them before the next premium is due.

Easiest Maryland car insurance discounts to qualify for

Some Maryland car insurance discounts are particularly easy to qualify for. For instance, Maryland has more than 20 military facilities and over 400,000 Department of Defense employees.[1] That means many Maryland drivers may qualify for a military discount.

More than 10% of Maryland drivers own more than one vehicle, according to Insurify data. This makes qualifying for a multi-car discount more attainable. Whether you rent or own your home in Maryland, a bundle discount is also easy to get.

Finally, driving safely can easily get you a car insurance discount, either through a driver-monitoring program or an accident-free (or claim-free) discount. That said, Maryland has some of the highest rates of drivers with accidents in the country. More than 5% of drivers in Maryland have an accident on their record, according to Insurify data.

Car insurance discounts exclusive to Maryland

By state law, car insurance companies in Maryland are required to offer you a discount for good driving.[2] Specifically, this means you have no moving traffic violation with more than one point or any accident in the last three years. You must also have had continuous coverage during that time to be eligible.

How to maximize your Maryland car insurance discounts

To save the most money on car insurance, spend a little time trying to maximize your auto coverage discounts in Maryland. Do this by:

  • Asking your insurer about the Maryland-mandated good driver discount if you have a clean driving record.

  • Researching which discounts you may be eligible for through your employer (like Johns Hopkins University or federal/military employment) or other membership groups (like your credit union).

  • Bundling your car insurance with another policy from the same insurer, such as home insurance or renters insurance.

  • Asking for a full list of discounts to determine what you’re eligible for.

  • Comparing quotes from multiple insurers, factoring in all potential discounts.

How to apply car insurance discounts to your policy in Maryland

Applying car insurance discounts to your Maryland policy is usually straightforward:

  1. Review your policy or contact your insurer to see which discounts you may qualify for. Remember, in Maryland, insurers must offer discounts to drivers with clean records.

  2. Provide any required documentation. This might include proof of good grades, certification that you’ve completed a defensive driving course, or your military ID.

  3. Enroll in an insurer’s telematics program. State Farm’s Drive Safe & Save and Liberty Mutual’s RightTrack offer some of the biggest discounts for Maryland drivers.

  4. Opt in to paperless billing and pay for your policy in full each time it renews.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 250 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
