I’ve been with them for years. I can’t view my bill online, and I can’t see my proof of insurance card online either. They tell me I don’t need one because when my tag is run it will show proof, but if I travel and I’m asked for it, then I don’t have it and can’t access it. I also think I’m paying too much for two vehicles. I just paid my bill for this month, and I’m going to find other insurance soon. Just disappointed.

Grading State Farm
I've been with State Farm for home and auto insurance for years. I had a terrible experience with our former agent during the 2011 tornado. The home office sent two people from Jacksonville to help us out. I'm not sure who my new agent is.

Why we picked this company

Alfa can be a popular choice in the Yellowhammer State because its discounts are unusually tailored to Alabama. The insurer offers occupational or affinity savings for eligible educators, first responders, farmers, government workers, military personnel, ministers, and employees of Alabama auto manufacturers.

Pros
  • Offers discounts aimed specifically at Alabama workers

  • Alabama auto-manufacturer employees may qualify for an affinity discount

  • Offers Alabama drivers 55 and older a defensive driver discount

Cons
  • Doesn’t publish fixed savings amounts for most discounts

  • Occupational discounts have specific employment requirements

  • Defensive driver discount has age, driving record, and requalification requirements in Alabama

Largest car insurance discounts available in Alabama

Car insurance discount percentages don’t translate directly into identical dollar savings because insurers apply discounts differently and may limit them to certain coverages. Still, several insurers advertise substantial savings to Alabama drivers, as you can see below.

Among Alabama-specific advertised amounts, Allstate’s Drivewise and State Farm’s Drive Safe & Save offer some of the largest potential savings, at up to 30%. Allstate also advertises savings of up to 25% for insuring multiple cars.

Easiest Alabama car insurance discounts to qualify for

Some discounts require years of safe driving, but others involve little more than changing how you buy or manage your policy. Progressive, for example, lists online quote, online signature, paid-in-full, homeowner, multi-car, and multi-policy discounts for Alabama customers.

Drivers shouldn’t assume every eligible discount is already reflected in their rate. Ask an insurer or agent to review your policy, especially after buying a home, adding another vehicle, changing annual mileage, or becoming eligible for a senior-driver discount.

Car insurance discounts exclusive to Alabama

Alabama has at least one state-specific discount opportunity. Alfa says employees of auto manufacturers in Alabama may qualify for an affinity discount. That’s particularly relevant in a state with a significant auto-manufacturing workforce.

Alfa also offers occupational discounts in Alabama to qualifying first responders, educators, farmers, ministers, state or federal employees, and other groups. However, some of those programs are also available in Mississippi or Georgia.

Alabama law provides another important savings opportunity through an approved defensive driving course. Insurers must include a premium reduction for a principal driver age 55 or older who completes an approved motor vehicle accident-prevention course.[1] The reduction lasts for three years, although insurers can impose conditions related to at-fault accidents and moving violations.

Qualifying courses must be sponsored by organizations such as AAA, AARP, or the National Safety Council, or otherwise approved by the state.[2]

How to maximize your Alabama car insurance discounts

Choosing the right insurer can make a huge difference in the number and value of the discounts available to you. But you can do several things to get even more value out of the auto insurance discounts you’ll receive.

  • Stack discounts when possible. Combining multi-car, bundling, safe-driver, and payment discounts can yield more savings than relying on a single discount.

  • Consider telematics if you drive safely. State Farm and Allstate advertise potential savings of up to 30% in Alabama, although driving behavior can affect results.

  • Check Alabama-specific eligibility. Alfa’s occupational programs and Alabama’s 55-plus accident-prevention-course provision can unlock savings that drivers might otherwise overlook.

  • Compare the final premium, not the number of discounts. Whether you’re looking for full coverage or a liability-only policy, a company offering fewer discounts can still have the lowest overall car insurance costs.

How to apply car insurance discounts to your policy in Alabama

To apply car insurance discounts to your policy in Alabama, follow these steps:

  1. Ask for a discount review. Give your insurer updated information about vehicles, drivers, occupations, mileage, grades, other policies, medical payments, comprehensive coverage needs, and safety equipment.

  2. Provide documentation when required. Good student, occupational, military, and defensive driving discounts may require proof.

  3. Enroll in optional programs. Usage-based programs such as Drivewise, Drive Safe & Save, DriveEasy, and Snapshot require enrollment and the collection of driving data.

  4. Recheck discounts at renewal. Eligibility can change, and some discounts expire or require periodic requalification.

Some insurers automatically identify discounts during the quote process. Progressive, for example, says it automatically applies discounts during quoting, while Alfa notes that it can validate discounts before renewal.[3]

Cheapest car insurance for Alabama drivers

Alabama drivers pay considerably less for car insurance than the national average. Insurify data shows average Alabama rates of $142 per month for full coverage and $66 per month for liability coverage, compared with national averages of $187 and $99, respectively.

Insurify projects Alabama’s average annual premium will rise about 1% by the end of 2026, from $1,652 in 2025 to roughly $1,670.

Discounts can lower an individual driver’s rate further, especially when fulfilling state requirements for property damage liability coverage, but comparing quotes remains important because insurers calculate rates and discounts differently.

The below rates in Alabama are estimated rates current as of: Wednesday, September 30 at 5:00 PM PDT.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 250 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible
