Driving for Uber, Lyft, or another rideshare company is an easy way to make some quick cash. But what do you need to know before hitting the road?

Rideshare companies, which allow private individuals to use their vehicles as taxis and transport paying customers using mobile apps, are among the USA’s fastest-growing industries. The two most popular rideshare companies are Lyft and Uber––it’s estimated that Uber alone employed around one million drivers in 2019!

Thanks to the ability to set your own hours and use your own car, driving for a rideshare company is an increasingly appealing option for many Americans.  But regardless of what company you prefer, one requirement stays the same: you need insurance, and quote comparison site Insurify takes only minutes to help find the most affordable rideshare insurance for you.

Uber vs. Lyft Driver Requirements

If you’ve ever considered driving for Uber or Lyft, you may be wondering what requirements the companies have for new drivers. Insurify did some research to find out!

Age

Both Uber and Lyft require that you be above a certain age to drive for them, but that age varies depending upon where you live. Uber stipulates that you must “Meet the minimum age to drive in your city,” while Lyft states that “The minimum age requirement to drive with Lyft varies by region.” That usually ranges from around age 21 to age 25.

Some specific age requirements for the most popular cities, like New York or Miami, are at the end of this article.

Driver Experience

Both Uber and Lyft require drivers to have a certain amount of experience on the road. Uber requires that you:

  • Have at least one year of licensed driving experience in the US––or three years if you are under 23 years old!

Lyft also requires one year of driving experience, but only for the following states:

  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Illinois
  • Massachusetts
  • Minnesota
  • Oregon
  • Pennsylvania
  • Vermont
  • Washington

If you aren’t driving in one of these states, you can drive for Lyft with under one year of experience––unless your city specifies otherwise!

Driving Record Check

To be approved as a driver by either Uber or Lyft, you’ll need to pass a driving record check. A clean driving record helps indicate that you can safely drive customers to their destinations. Although both Lyft and Uber reserve the right to disqualify drivers for any reason, here are some of the violations Lyft lists as potential disqualifiers:

  • More than three minor moving violations in the past three years:
    • Examples include accidents or traffic light violations
  • One or more major moving violations in the past three years:
    • This could consist of reckless driving, or of driving on a suspended license
  • A DUI or other drug-related driving violation from the past seven years (or longer, in some states)
  • A serious driving-related conviction in the past seven years:
    • This could be a hit-and-run, or a felony involving a vehicle

Uber’s driving record requirements vary depending on your city and state. That said, some reasons your driving record may disqualify you from working as an Uber driver include:

  • Major driving violations
  • A recent history of multiple minor driving violations:
    • These violations include, but aren’t limited to, no-fault accidents

Criminal Record Check

A criminal record may disqualify you from driving for Lyft or Uber––even if it’s not directly related to driving. What specific crimes may be disqualifying varies by location. However, below are some potentially disqualifying criminal offenses for Lyft drivers nationwide.

  • You’re listed on the National Sex Offender Registry.
  • You have been convicted at any time of a disqualifying violent crime:
    • This could include homicide, kidnapping, human trafficking, arson, burglary, carjacking, robbery, or aggravated assault.
  • You’ve been convicted at any time of a sexual offense.
  • You’ve been convicted at any time of an act of terror.
  • You’ve been convicted of a fraud-related offense in the past seven years, although this time frame may be longer or shorter depending on location.
  • You’ve been convicted of a drug-related offense in the past seven years, although this time frame may be longer or shorter depending on location.
  • You have been convicted of a disqualifying theft or property damage offense in the past seven years, although this time frame may be longer or shorter in certain places.

Uber is less specific about what types of criminal records could disqualify you from driving. But you may be disqualified by Uber’s criminal background check if:

  • You have been convicted or are facing pending charges for murder, sexual assault, terrorism-related offenses, or other serious criminal convictions.
  • You have committed or are facing pending charges for a felony, violent crime, or sex offense.
  • You are a registered sex offender.

Uber vs. Lyft Vehicle Requirements

One of the most crucial components of working as a Lyft or Uber driver is your vehicle! Lyft’s requirements for vehicles vary by city and state. But here are some vehicle requirements that apply regardless of where you live:

  • All Lyft vehicles are required to have four doors.
  • All Lyft vehicles must seat at least four passengers.
  • Vehicles are required to have a minimum of five seatbelts and a maximum of eight seatbelts.
  • Lyft does not accept certain subcompact cars. They are:
    • Chevrolet: Aveo, Aveo5, Metro, Volt
    • Daewoo: Lanos
    • Ford: Fiesta
    • Hyundai: Accent
    • Kia: Rio, Rio 5-Door, Rio Cinco, Rio5
    • Mazda: Mazda 2
    • MINI: Cooper, Cooper Clubman, Cooper Countryman, Cooper Countryman Hybrid, Cooper Hardtop, Cooper S, Cooper S Clubman, Cooper S Countryman, Cooper S Countryman All4, Cooper S Countryman All4 Hybrid, Cooper S Countryman Hybrid, Cooper S Hardtop
    • Pontiac: G3
    • Scion: xD

If you don’t own a vehicle or your vehicle is not of an acceptable standard, you can use a rental car to drive for Lyft through their Express Drive program. Uber also offers Uber drivers the ability to drive rented cars through the Uber Vehicle Marketplace.

Like Lyft, Uber’s vehicle requirements vary from state to state (and we’ll cover the requirements for some of the most popular cities below!). But here are the basic requirements to become an Uber driver for Uber’s economy service, UberX.

  • All UberX drivers must have a 4-door vehicle, five seatbelts, and seat at least four passengers.
  • Your vehicle must be no more than 15 years of age.
    • In some states and cities, the year requirement is more strict: your vehicle must be no more than ten years of age!
  • Your car must be in good condition, with no cosmetic damage.
  • Your vehicle must not have any commercial branding.
  • You must pass the Uber vehicle inspection requirements.

Current Device

Since you connect with your rideshare company and your customers through your personal device, it’s crucial to make sure it meets acceptable standards!

  • Lyft drivers must have a personal device with a cellular connection to contact customers through the Lyft Driver app!
  • Lyft drivers should use iOS 11 and Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher on their personal devices. For the best results from the Lyft Driver app, Android users should run Android 7.0+

If you want to work as an Uber driver, it’s critical that your phone can run the Uber Driver app.

  • If you have an iPhone, the Uber Driver app requires iOS 12.4 or later.
  • Android owners must use Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher but will experience fewer glitches with more recent versions of the Android OS.
  • Uber drivers must use their own smartphone with a minimum of 2GB of data available per month.
  • The phones must have a cellular connection and be capable of calling customers if necessary!

Uber vs. Lyft Insurance and Documents

One of the most pivotal parts of staying safe while working for Uber or Lyft is your driver’s insurance!

Whether you drive for Uber or Lyft, you’ll need some form of driver’s insurance, though Uber and Lyft provide additional insurance in case of any accidents or collisions while on the job. Uber’s requirements for driver’s insurance are:

  • You must have comprehensive or third party property damage cover.
  • You must be listed as an insured driver on the policy, even if you’re driving someone else’s car.
  • The insurance policy must list the vehicle make type, model, year, and registration.
  • The insurance policy must display an effective and expiry date.

Finding affordable car insurance that fits your budget can be challenging, but Insurify streamlines the process with just a few clicks––for free!

In addition to proof of vehicle insurance, all Uber drivers must share the following documentation:

  • A valid US driver’s license
  • Proof of residency in your city, state, or province
  • Either official or temporary registration documents
    • Your name must be listed as a driver as well as the year and make of the vehicle.
  • A driver profile photo
    • Must be a forward-facing, centered photo including the driver’s full face and top of shoulders, with no sunglasses
    • Must be a photo only of the driver with no other subject in the frame, well-lit, and in focus; it cannot be a driver’s license photo or other printed photograph

Lyft also has requirements for driver’s insurance: Lyft drivers must have a personal auto insurance policy that meets minimum state coverage requirements. Though the precise requirements will vary from city to city, some other general document requirements to drive for Lyft are:

  • Current and valid driver’s license
  • Valid plates with current registration (commercial plates are also acceptable)

Uber vs. Lyft Requirements by City

We’ve covered some of the basic requirements for becoming a rideshare driver for Uber or Lyft nationally––including the importance of reliable car insurance!

But what if you are interested in driving for a more luxurious line than the basic Lyft or UberX? Perhaps you’re interested in Lyft Lux, Lyft’s luxury sedan line, or Uber Black, Uber’s elite black car service. Read on to learn more about each tier’s driver and vehicle requirements (keep in mind that each service’s availability varies from city to city!).

Uber and Lyft Requirements: Miami
