While backing out of a parking spot, a car sped by me and didn't see me. Naturally, I hit the side of her car and sustained no damage to my car. I called the police for a report, but because the plaza was private property, they wouldn't come. My insurance went up by $900 for five years. I have had a safe driver discount for years, and this really hurt.

I wouldn't recommend it. I drive one car, am retired, widowed, and own my car and home. My rate increased by $500 a year, even though I drive less than 3,000 miles a year. I am definitely shopping for new coverage.

Affordable Insurance for Seniors?
I got Hartford through AARP, as it was touted as a good deal for retirees. However, this doesn't seem to hold true for those on a retirement or fixed income. I drive about 6 miles per week and recently experienced a $90.00 increase in cost. The same is true for my home insurance. I've never had a claim on either policy. In fact, I paid $8500.00 out of pocket to remove a tree threatening my house during the last storm. I'm currently seeking a better-suited insurance option for my needs.

I have been with The Hartford for over 30 years. In the past few years, when I had to communicate with an agent, it was the worst experience. She never returned calls, she forgot or didn't make notes on the issue at hand, so she was always in a state of confusion. She kept trying to send me a check that I told her several times was already paid to the auto shop. I wanted to switch at that time but was too busy. Now, my monthly payments have more than doubled. I'm done with their very poor service and increased rates. I wouldn't recommend them.

Look for a company that will support you and offer competitive or better rates for retirees who have had a policy without claims. Their rates should go down, not increase by 26% or more just because they have insured homes or cars that should have been priced higher. Now, they want everyone to pay for the few. The Hartford has always treated me fairly, providing good service at a good price. However, in the last two years, they've raised my rates by 100%, despite the fact that I've never made a claim, had an accident, received a DWI, or even a ticket. I have a perfect record, so I don't understand why my rates have increased so drastically. I understand that they need to account for high-risk drivers, but it seems unfair to penalize those of us with a perfect record. A 100% increase in 2 years seems almost illegal.

Consider Policy Changes Carefully
They informed me about a new option on the auto policy. I agreed to this new option without knowing that it would negate my $850 credit, which I had earned for having no incidents. When the representative finally informed me about this, I requested to revert the changes. However, she said it was impossible once the changes were entered into the system. This upset me greatly. I believe they should have informed me about this consequence beforehand.

First of all, unlike other major insurers, they conduct a credit check. For me, this meant unfreezing my accounts with all three credit agencies so that the Hartford could check my credit. Either they don’t have the same connections as other insurers, or the others don’t check, which I find hard to believe. Secondly, when states allowed insurers to raise their rates, the Hartford increased their rates to the maximum amount allowed. Third, the Hartford is owned, I believe, by AARP, and although they are no longer a company exclusively for retirees, retirement remains their primary focus. If so many Hartford customers are retirees, isn't raising their rates to the highest possible amount somewhat harsh? I understand that there are plenty of retirees who have substantial savings, but there are also many who are living on a fixed income. The rate increase I experienced was nearly double what I’d been paying. This seems like pure greed to me.

My first six months cost me $462.00. I used an app where they could monitor if I was using my phone, speeding, or braking too hard. I always had a great score, with no problems of any kind. However, when it came time to renew, the price increased to $604.00. The customer service was rude, and when I asked why the price had increased so much, they said it was because other companies were raising their prices. I have since found better prices elsewhere.
