4 reasons why car insurance is so expensive in Massachusetts
Auto insurance is relatively affordable in Massachusetts in comparison to the rest of the country, and Insurify’s data team predicts rates will continue to trend downward in a recent report. That said, some factors work against Massachusetts drivers, preventing rates from dropping even further.

Liability quotes start at $50/mo.
Dense urban traffic causes high accident rates
Massachusetts has one of the highest population density rankings in the entire country, with 91% of residents living in urban areas. It’s no surprise that heavily congested streets mean you’ll contend with higher accident rates, too.[1] In 2022, Massachusetts had the second-highest number of property damage liability claims in the country.[2]
Higher minimum coverage requirements
Massachusetts is a no-fault state, which means you’ll need to purchase additional personal injury protection (PIP) coverage. But even more than that, the Massachusetts Division of Insurance recently updated the minimum coverage requirements, with changes taking effect on July 1, 2025.
Here are the current minimum requirements:[3]
Bodily injury liability coverage: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident (previously, it was $20,000 and $40,000)
Property damage liability coverage: $30,000 (previously, it was $5,000)
Uninsured motorist coverage: Same levels as for bodily injury
PIP coverage: $8,000
High numbers of EVs
Electric vehicles (EVs) tend to perform better in areas with a high population density, and nearly twice as many Massachusetts drivers choose EVs in comparison to drivers nationwide. But EVs cost more to repair and are typically worth more, which makes them more expensive to insure.
Flooding and storm damage
Coastal areas tend to be more exposed to storms and flood-related problems, and Massachusetts is no different. Nearly 22% of Boston addresses are at severe risk for flooding in the next three decades, according to First Street. You only have coverage for weather-related damage if you carry comprehensive insurance, which typically comes with full coverage.
How Massachusetts car insurance rates have changed
Insurify’s data team predicts that Massachusetts drivers buying full coverage will pay an average annual rate of $1,713 by the end of 2026. That represents a 3.6% drop in pricing from 2025.

How to lower your car insurance rate in Massachusetts
No matter your age, driving history, or other circumstances, you have ways to lower your car insurance costs. Here are a few ideas specific to Massachusetts:
Avoid traffic violations. Massachusetts drivers pay an average of 19% more with an at-fault accident in their driving history, 34% more with a speeding ticket, and 59% more with a prior driving while intoxicated (DWI) conviction, according to Insurify data. Compare car insurance rates. Massachusetts insurance companies have their own pricing formulas. Some may offer savings such as a low-mileage discount or deals for bundling policies.
Bump up your full-coverage deductibles. If your lender requires full coverage — as Insurify data shows nearly one-third of Massachusetts drivers do — you can often save money by choosing higher deductibles.
Switch from full coverage to minimum coverage. Two-thirds of Massachusetts drivers own their vehicle and get to choose between minimum and full coverage. A basic minimum policy typically costs 25% less in Massachusetts, according to Insurify data.

Methodology
Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 250 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.
Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).
Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:
- Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
- Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
- No additional coverage
- Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
- Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible
