It’s typically not possible to secure coverage without paying anything up front. But some insurers require only the first month’s payment as a deposit, rather than a separate fee.

Some of the people don’t seem to have a clue what’s going on. I ask a direct question and never get an answer. They just don’t know or don’t care. Home insurance is OK, I guess. Because we’re in Bay Minette and within a 40-mile radius of the coast, we pay the same as having a beach house. The deductible on my home is around $5,000 to $5,400. They usually don’t cover what I need. For 3 autos and a house, it’s around $6,000 a year. I’m 77 years old, and they never have any suggestions on how to lower my insurance. By the way, I’ve had insurance with State Farm for around 46 to 50 years and get a discount because I’ve been with the two agents for 25 years. Nothing for senior citizens at State Farm.

Glass Coverage Is Bad
Shop around. The glass coverage is weak, and they wasted time with the claim, causing a repairable chip to spread. It took five days for them to move forward with the repair, and it ended up costing me an entire windshield.

Too Much
My insurance keeps going up even though I’m enrolled in Drive Safe. I think I pay too much, and I’m considering shopping around for better rates.

What is the average deposit amount in Alabama?

The average cost of car insurance in Alabama is $104 per month, which breaks down to $66 per month for liability-only coverage and $142 per month for full coverage. Auto rates in Alabama are lower than in neighboring Georgia and Tennessee, as well as the national average.

The state you live in doesn’t determine your car insurance deposit. How much you pay will vary by your insurer and driver profile. An Alabama driver with a clean driving record presents a lower risk and will generally pay a lower rate than high-risk drivers, like those with a speeding ticket, driving under the influence (DUI) conviction, at-fault accident, or SR-22 requirement.

In the following table, you can see average liability rates and estimated initial payments for different driver profiles in Alabama. As you’ll notice, your initial standard monthly payment should serve as your deposit when buying insurance.

Driver Profile
Average Monthly Rate
Estimated First Payment
Clean driving record$66$66
One speeding ticket$88$88
One at-fault accident$92$92
One DUI$92$92
Teen driver$130$130
Senior driver$59$59
Driver with an SR-22$83$83

How to get car insurance with the lowest deposit in Alabama

Getting car insurance with the lowest up-front costs in Alabama involves choosing an insurer with the right coverage and payment frequency for your needs. The following strategies can help you secure an affordable policy in Alabama.

  • Compare deposits and fees. Request quotes from multiple car insurance companies to compare up-front costs, including the down payment and any setup fees. National General, State Farm, and USAA are the cheapest car insurance companies in Alabama, on average.

  • Ask about discounts. See if you qualify for lower insurance premiums. Common discounts include multi-policy, safe driver, and good student discounts. If you’re one of the 19% of Alabama drivers aged 65 and older, check if your insurer offers a senior discount for completing a defensive driving course.[1]

  • Purchase minimum coverage. Buying a bare-minimum policy with Alabama’s minimum 25/50/25 liability coverage generally costs less than buying a full-coverage policy with collision coverage and comprehensive coverage. Selecting the minimum coverage will save you money each month but provide less financial protection if you’re in a car accident.

Alabama car insurance requirements

Alabama car insurance requirements include 25/50/25 in liability coverage. Alabama follows a traditional “at-fault” system, which means the person who causes a crash is financially responsible for the resulting damages.[2]

It’s illegal to drive without at least the minimum liability insurance in Alabama. Driving without insurance can result in suspension of your vehicle registration and a reinstatement fee of up to $400.

Coverage Type
Alabama Minimum Requirement
Bodily injury liability$25,000 per person/$50,000 per accident
Property damage liability$25,000 per accident

Why car insurance deposits vary in Alabama

Car insurance rates in Alabama are consistently lower than the national average, likely due in part to its average liability coverage requirements and relatively low cost of living compared to nearby states.

Your initial monthly deposit will typically depend on the following factors:

  • Location risk factors: Your ZIP code and local accident rates can increase your insurance premiums, which may increase your initial payment.

  • Credit history: Alabama allows credit-based insurance scoring, and drivers with poor credit may pay higher premiums.

  • Driving record: Your overall driving history can affect your insurance costs. In Alabama, insurers may ask about any accidents and traffic violations from the past three to five years.[3]

  • Coverage level: The coverage you choose affects your overall insurance costs and up-front payment. Minimum coverage is generally less expensive than full coverage.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 250 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible
