What is liability car insurance?

Liability car insurance covers repairs to another vehicle and injuries to another person. It protects you financially if you cause an accident and need to cover vehicle repairs or medical bills. Louisiana requires drivers to have liability car insurance or face stiff penalties.[1]

Full-coverage car insurance includes additional coverages, such as collision and comprehensive coverage. It helps pay for repairs to your own vehicle, regardless of fault, and also covers things like flooding, fire, theft, and vandalism. If you have a car loan or lease, your lender likely requires full-coverage insurance.[2]

Minimum liability car insurance requirements in Louisiana

Louisiana law requires all drivers to carry bodily injury liability coverage and property damage liability coverage. Here’s what each covers:

  • Bodily injury liability: Covers injuries you cause to others while driving

  • Property damage liability: Covers damage you cause to someone else’s vehicle or property while driving

The following table shows the Pelican State’s minimum liability insurance requirements.

Coverage Type
Minimum Requirement
Bodily injury liability$15,000 per person/$30,000 per accident
Property damage liability$25,000 per accident

Liability insurance only covers damage to the other vehicle when you cause an accident. You can also buy optional coverages, like comprehensive and collision coverage, that can help pay to repair your vehicle, minus a deductible, if an accident or incident damages it.

For example, if you cause an accident on Interstate 10 during New Orleans rush hour traffic, your liability insurance covers any damages or injuries to the other party, up to the policy limits. Collision insurance would help pay for repairs to your own vehicle, while medical payments coverage or personal injury protection (PIP) would help cover your own medical bills.

Is minimum liability coverage enough in Louisiana?

In 2025, the average cost of a minor crash with property damage in Louisiana was more than $28,000.[3] Depending on the crash severity, Louisiana minimum liability coverage may not be enough.

For example, if a crash causes $20,000 in injuries to one person, minimum coverage would only pay up to $15,000. You’d need to pay the remaining $5,000 out of pocket or risk a lawsuit. Similarly, minimum coverage would pay $25,000 in property damage repairs, so if the accident causes $35,000 of damage, you’d pay $10,000 out of pocket.

State-minimum liability coverage also won’t cover repairs to your own vehicle. You’ll need collision coverage for that.

Penalties for driving without liability insurance in Louisiana

Driving without liability insurance is illegal in Louisiana, and you could face severe penalties. If a police officer catches you driving uninsured, you could receive a fine of $500–$1,000. And if you get in an accident, the state can revoke your vehicle registration and driving privileges for 180 days.

If you cause injury, death, or more than $500 in property damage and fail to provide proof of insurance within 30 days, the fine will be $1,000–$10,000. You’ll also have your license and registration revoked for 12 months and must do 40–200 hours of community service.[4]

Louisiana has a “no-pay, no-play” law that prohibits uninsured drivers from recovering the first $100,000 of bodily injury and the first $100,000 of property damage. This applies even if you’re not the at-fault driver.[5]

How to find cheap liability car insurance in Louisiana

Here are some of the best ways to find cheaper car insurance rates in Louisiana:

  • Shop for discounts. Common Louisiana insurance discounts include good student, defensive driving, safety features, and usage-based discounts.

  • Bundle your policies. See if your insurer will give you a discount for insuring multiple vehicles or purchasing several types of insurance with them.

  • Shop around. Compare rates from several insurance companies every six months to ensure you’re getting the cheapest rate available for the coverage you need.

  • Work on your credit. Louisiana lets insurance companies consider your credit when setting your premiums. Improving your credit by making on-time loan and credit card payments and keeping your credit card balances low could help you secure a cheaper rate.

  • Consider the Louisiana Automobile Insurance Plan. If you can’t get a policy through a private insurance company, look into the Louisiana Automobile Insurance Program. An agent can help you obtain this policy if you’ve exhausted all other options.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 250 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible
