In a city where the local football team is anything but mediocre, car insurance rates are just that: middle of the road. If you’re a driver in Kansas City, Missouri, you’ll spend $194 on liability only and $325 on full coverage per month, on average. That’s a little higher than the national average, but not by much. Drivers in the U.S. pay $170 per month for liability-only coverage and $253 per month for full coverage.

What drives car insurance prices higher in Kansas City, Missouri, is likely its population of more than half a million people. With so many drivers, the risk of an accident goes up. You also might find yourself riding your brakes a lot driving down I-70 or I-29 in rush-hour traffic.

Quick Facts
  • Kansas City, Missouri, has the third-highest car insurance premiums in the state.

  • Missouri requires its drivers to have liability insurance in order to drive legally in the state.

  • The longer you have a safe driving history, the more your monthly premiums could decrease.

Just Don't! Save Yourself!

Absolutely terrible. This company left me without a car for 8 months. They couldn't decide whether or not to total my car after it was already repaired. There were so many mistakes on their end and all I received at the end was a voicemail acknowledging their mistakes and an apology. This was literally the worst experience I've had with an insurance company. I'm traumatized!

Considering Expanding Coverage

I was never informed that my rate would increase every month for some reason. No one told me about it. I received a notice in the mail stating that what I was supposed to pay that month was always 10 or 20 dollars more than it was the previous month. I would have liked to have been informed about this.

Cheapest liability-only car insurance in Kansas City

Liability-only car insurance shields you financially if you’re involved in an at-fault accident. If you damage another person’s car, or the other driver and passengers are hurt, your insurance would pay for the repairs and hospital bills. If you’re injured, or your own car is damaged, your liability insurance wouldn’t pay for those expenses.

As such, liability-only policies are generally among the most affordable, and you can see a collection of average quotes below from top insurers in Kansas City.

Cheapest full-coverage car insurance in Kansas City

Liability-only insurance covers the expenses of other cars, drivers, and passengers in an accident you cause. Full-coverage car insurance provides this same coverage and also covers any damage or hospital expenses that involve you, your passengers, and your vehicle. You may want to have full-coverage car insurance if you have an expensive car or if you’d find it financially challenging to replace or repair your car if it was wrecked.

Insurers calculate premiums for auto policies by looking at many different factors, and your age is one of them. If you’re 75 or older, you’ll notice that your premiums may increase. Cheapest car insurance for teens

Many teenage drivers are conscientious, careful drivers who take safety seriously, but they don’t have much experience driving, and inexperience can lead to errors. As such, insurers charge higher premiums for this age group.

Fortunately, you have ways to lower your insurance costs. For instance, driving a type of car that insurers consider particularly safe might allow for lower rates. Insurers also often charge lower premiums when a teenager stays on their parents’ policy than if a teen driver has their own car insurance policy. Good grades can also land you a student discount.

If you’re a teen driver living in Kansas City, or you have a teen driver, this table shows what you’d pay each month, on average, for car insurance.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Kansas City

You’ll need to comparison shop to find cheap auto insurance rates in Kansas City, and the quotes you receive will depend on your driving history, age, credit history, marital status, and type of car you drive.

No matter the quotes you receive, you can also lower your car insurance by doing the following:

  • Opt for liability-only coverage. Liability-only coverage means that you (not the insurance company) are on the hook to pay for your own damages and medical bills if you’re in an accident determined to be your fault. As such, because the insurer is assuming less risk, the premiums you pay will be lower than for full-coverage insurance.

  • Raise your deductible. A higher deductible means you’re assuming more of the up-front risk, so you’ll pay a lower premium. While this may seem appealing, be sure you don’t set your deductible so high you can’t afford to pay it if you need to file a claim.

  • Inquire about discounts. You should always ask your insurance agent periodically if they can steer you to any discounts that will bring your rates down. Discount opportunities change, so check regularly what discounts you may qualify for.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
