We strive to provide open, honest, and unbiased information about the insurance products and services we review. But it does not influence our meticulously researched editorial content, what we write about, or any reviews or recommendations we may make. We do not guarantee favorable reviews or any coverage at all in exchange for compensation.

AIG is best known for its globally recognized commercial insurance and industrial insurance products — but drivers shouldn’t ignore AIG’s car insurance. From worldwide liability coverage to a popular rental car insurance program, AIG is for drivers who travel far and wide.

While AIG offers plenty of benefits for jet-setters, it doesn’t offer as many discounts as other insurance companies. Drivers looking for the cheapest rates might want to look elsewhere. In this guide, you’ll learn about AIG’s different coverages and if you should consider a car insurance policy from AIG.

Quick Facts
  • AIG earned an A.M. Best financial strength rating of A (Excellent).

  • Drivers with AIG can add a virtually unlimited amount of vehicles to their policies.

  • AIG’s On the Go telematics program rewards safe driving.

What is AIG auto insurance?

AIG, short for American International Group, launched in 1919 and has since expanded into one of the world’s largest financial services companies. The insurer offers commercial and private insurance lines in more than 70 countries and is the United States’ 12th-largest insurer by market share.[1]

AIG made headlines during the 2008 financial crisis as one of the companies the federal government bailed out. The company is more financially stable now, earning an A.M. Best rating of “A,” indicating excellent financial strength.[2]

AIG Insurance pros and cons

Pros
  • Offers a telematics program: Safe drivers can save up to 15% when they sign up for the AIG On the Go program.

  • High-quality repair parts: AIG only uses original manufacturers’ parts for repairs.

  • Robust collector car coverage: Drivers of antiques can insure their prized possessions through AIG’s popular collector car program.

Cons
  • Limited discounts: AIG offers a safe driving discount but doesn’t offer discounts for teen drivers or defensive driving course enrollees.

  • Mixed reviews: Some online reviews discuss a frustrating customer service experience.

  • Specialized coverage: AIG’s unique features, like antique car insurance and worldwide coverage, might not be relevant for everyday drivers.

AIG car insurance coverage

Drivers in nearly every state must carry some form of liability insurance. This typically includes bodily injury liability coverage, which covers the other driver’s medical bills if you cause an accident, and property damage liability insurance, which covers the other driver’s car repairs.

AIG offers worldwide liability coverage, which means you’re covered even if you get into an accident outside the United States. AIG also offers liability limits of up to $1 million per accident or umbrella liability coverage that allows limits of up to $100 million. AIG’s policies also include property damage coverage and additional living expenses coverage.[3]

AIG Insurance offers the following optional coverages:

  • Rental car coverage: AIG reimburses all rental car costs if your damaged car is in the shop, with no per-day limit. Total reimbursement is limited to $12,500.

  • Collector car insurance: Drivers of antiques can insure with AIG at an agreed-upon value so that you aren’t penalized for depreciation. AIG also covers your car while it’s shipped between your homes, even if that involves overseas travel.

  • Specialty insurance: Drivers who want to insure motorcycles, motorhomes, all-terrain vehicles, golf carts, and more can easily add these unique vehicles to their policy.

AIG car insurance cost by state

Car insurance rates vary by state based on a variety of factors.[4] Your state’s medical care costs, legal costs, car repair costs, weather patterns, and insurance requirements can all affect how much drivers pay on average.

For instance, New Hampshire insurers often have the lowest average rates because it’s the only state that doesn’t require car insurance.

Drivers in states with high average car insurance rates, such as Michigan or Florida, should look for discounts. AIG might be the right choice if you need specialty coverage, but it’s worth looking for car insurance quotes from at least three other insurers.

StateAverage Monthly Cost
Florida$643
Hawaii$252

AIG car insurance rates by driving history

Drivers with traffic violations, such as speeding tickets, at-fault accidents, or DUIs, pay more for car insurance on average. You’ll also pay more, on average, if you’re an inexperienced driver with no driving history.

Meanwhile, maintaining a clean driving record shows the car insurance company that you’re a low risk for future claims. On top of lower average rates, AIG drivers who maintain a clean driving record can save even more when they enroll in the AIG On the Go telematics program.

Driving HistoryAverage Monthly Cost
Clean record$448
With at-fault accident$641
With speeding ticket$600
With DUI$694

AIG car insurance cost by age

Young drivers pay more for car insurance, on average. Teenage drivers are statistically more likely to get into accidents, which raises the risk of future claims. Car insurance companies charge young drivers higher monthly premiums to offset these risks.

Older drivers signing up for AIG should expect more reasonable rates than younger drivers. This is especially true if you have a clean driving record. AIG advises drivers adding a teen to their policy to hire a professional driving instructor, outline responsibilities, and set a good example.

How to get an AIG car insurance quote

AIG encourages prospective customers to schedule a personalized insurance assessment. AIG’s agents will review your insurance coverage and evaluate your risk management profile. Call 1 (877) 418-1016 or email inquiry@pcgexchange.com to get started. You can also find an agent near you through AIG’s online search platform.

AIG car insurance discounts

While AIG boasts several optional features and specialty coverages, it doesn’t publicize too many discounts. The brand’s headline discount is its On the Go telematics program, which rewards drivers for safe driving.

On the Go tracks your driving habits through the app to calculate a driving score. Maintaining a score of 90 or above, over 100 kilometers, will knock 3% off your rates. Those savings rise to 15% if you earn a 100 driving score after driving over 600 kilometers. The more you demonstrate your safe driving habits, the more you’ll save.

Claim your discounts by clicking “Call For Your Discount” on the app. Your discount will be applied, and your savings will revert to 0% in the app, which you can increase through continued safe driving.

AIG also lets you add a virtually unlimited number of vehicles of all types to your policy — from antique cars to motorcycles. Speak to your agent to see if adding multiple vehicles to your policy will unlock a multi-vehicle discount, which most companies offer.

AIG Insurance bundling options

AIG also offers life insurance policies. Life insurance reimburses in the event of a loved one’s death. Term life, whole life, and quality of life insurance are different types. AIG also offers home insurance, which protects your home and reimburses you for repairs if your home is damaged.

Customers can save when they bundle other AIG policies with their AIG car insurance. Speak to your AIG insurance agent about your options and how much you can save when purchasing multiple AIG policies.

AIG Insurance reviews and ratings

AIG has earned high marks from many third-party insurance evaluators, though customer reviews are less positive. Here are what customers are saying about AIG car insurance.

AIG Insurance customer reviews

Reviews of AIG’s car insurance program skew negative, with AIG earning just 1.5 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot. Prospective policyholders should read reviews from several companies before settling on a policy.

Policyholder Ahmed posted a positive review on Trustpilot, however. He praises AIG for quickly handling an insurance claim after his windshield was cracked.

Unfortunately, most other reviews are negative. The reviewer below criticizes AIG for poorly handling a car rental insurance extension.

AIG Insurance ratings

Here are some of AIG’s ratings from various third-party consumer intelligence services:

  • A.M. Best: A (Excellent)

  • S&P: A+[5]

  • NAIC Complaint Index: 0.24 (fewer than the average number of claims)[6]

AIG Insurance vs. other insurance companies

The car insurance market is highly saturated, and different companies meet different needs for drivers. AIG might not have the market share of major players like Allstate, Farmers, or State Farm, but it can still be a good fit for certain drivers.

Here’s how AIG stacks up against three industry mainstays.

AIG vs. Allstate

Allstate is the country’s fourth-largest car insurance company by market share. Drivers pay an average of $146 per month for Allstate’s liability-only coverage and $212 for full coverage. Allstate’s score of 853 in J.D. Power’s customer satisfaction index is slightly below average among large insurers.[7]

Rideshare drivers should choose Allstate over AIG. AIG doesn’t offer rideshare coverage, while Allstate’s rideshare insurance extends your existing coverage to protect you and your car as you transport passengers.

AIG vs. Farmers

Farmers is the country’s seventh-largest car insurance company by market share. Drivers pay an average of $218 per month for Farmers’ liability-only coverage and $317 for full coverage. Farmers’ score of 815 in J.D. Power’s customer satisfaction index is below average among large insurers.[7]

Drivers looking for a good telematics program should probably choose AIG over Farmers. Safe drivers with AIG can save up to 15%, while Farmers drivers are entered into a monthly drawing for up to $100 in savings when they earn a high safe driving score. While drivers can save with both programs, AIG’s savings are more consistent.

AIG vs. State Farm

State Farm is the country’s largest car insurance company by market share. Drivers pay an average of $125 per month for State Farm’s liability-only coverage and $175 for full coverage. State Farm’s 877 score from J.D. Power’s customer satisfaction index is the highest among large insurers.[7]

Young drivers should probably choose State Farm over AIG. State Farm offers plenty of student-friendly discounts, including a good student discount of up to 25% and a discount of up to 15% for drivers younger than 25 who go three years without an at-fault accident or moving violation.
